The five members of San Diego’s delegation to the House of Representatives found some common ground over the region’s cross-border sewage woes.

Democrats Scott Peters, Susan Davis and Juan Vargas joined Republicans Darrell Issa and Duncan Hunter and wrote a letter asking the Department of State’s inspector general to investigate the cross-border spills.

“We write to formally request that the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) investigate the ongoing transnational sewage spills in the Tijuana River Valley,” the letter began.

The letter asks for a review of the behavior of the International Boundary and Water Commission, the federal agency established to deal with border-related water and pollution issues.

The congressional delegation said the IBWC is charged with and has the capacity to deal with the pollution situation.

“We ask that you provide greater accountability to the local regional IBWC office in San Diego County for assessing and implementing the necessary structural changes,” the letter said.

The lawmakers said the spills have severely impacted residents in the region and they are asking for more accountability.

The delegation asked for full and fair consideration of their request.
