Rep. Peters Endorsed by Gabby Giffords’ National Gun Violence Prevention Group

October 11, 2016

Today, Rep. Peters earned a strong endorsement from Americans for Responsible Solutions PAC, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Captain Mark Kelly. Former Rep. Giffords is a victim of gun violence herself, having survived an assassination attempt outside of a grocery store in 2011 that left her with a severe brain injury. Giffords and Kelly have become renowned advocates for stronger gun safety laws, urging Congress to pass measures that Rep. Peters supports to toughen background checks and ban suspected terrorists on the no-fly list from buying guns.

“Scott Peters has been a strong voice in Congress for responsible change that helps keep guns out of the wrong hands, save lives, and make our families safer. At every step, Congressman Peters has worked to help break the gun lobby’s grip on Washington while respecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners like us. We are grateful to have him as a champion for the vocal majority of Americans calling on Congress to act to reduce gun violence, and we look forward to continuing to stand with Scott Peters in the fight for safer communities,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Navy combat veteran Captain Mark Kelly, the Co-Founders of the gun violence prevention organization Americans for Responsible Solutions PAC.

In his time in Congress, Rep. Peters has himself become a nationally recognized leader in the fight to reduce gun violence. From reading names of gun violence victims in front of the House of Representatives, to live-streaming a protest sit-in by House Democrats to the world, Rep. Peters has fought to force a vote on laws to strengthen background checks to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and domestic abusers.

“Congress’ refusal to address gun violence has come to embody the partisan dysfunction that Americans hate about Washington, but I share San Diegans’ passion about gun safety and am committed to breaking the gridlock,” said Rep. Peters. “The vast majority of Americans – Republicans, Democrats, Independents, gun owners – agree that we need background checks on every gun purchase and shouldn’t be selling guns to suspected terrorists. I am grateful for this support from Gabby Giffords and Captain Kelly and look forward to continuing the fight with them to make our communities safer.”
