Rep. Peters Demands Speaker Boehner Allow Immigration Reform Vote

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) again called on the House Republican Majority, led by Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, to allow a vote on comprehensive immigration reform. Rep. Peters took action today by signing a ‘Demand a Vote’ petition on the floor of the House that, if signed by a majority of members, would force a vote in the House of Representatives on H.R. 15 the ‘Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.’

“If our country is going to remain the go-to place for entrepreneurs and innovators from around the world, we’ve got to make these reforms,” Rep. Peters said. “This is a rare instance where the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, labor groups, faith leaders, farmers, and farm workers all agree on the right way forward. This is also a top priority of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce now that we’re moving forward on the next phase of construction at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

“It’s time for Speaker Boehner to stop denying a vote on this bipartisan legislation that would create jobs and go a long way toward fixing our broken immigration system. I am confident this bill would pass if it was put to a vote.”

Rep. Peters is an original supporter of H.R. 15, bipartisan legislation which would improve border infrastructure, expand the economy by allowing more immigrants educated in America to stay and start their ventures here, and would, as recently estimatedby the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, reduce the national deficit by $900 billion. The Senate passed a similar version last June.
