SAN DIEGO, CA – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) hosted a press conference at EvoNexus, an incubator for startup companies located in Downtown San Diego, where he joined with representatives from the City of San Diego, the County of San Diego, and Jerry Sanders from the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce who thanked the congressman for his efforts to honor the late Duane Roth and highlight innovation. Also among those present in announcing the creation of a National Entrepreneurs’ Day were Nathan Fletcher from Qualcomm, and Ted Roth, Duane’s brother. The conference honored the late Duane Roth’s contributions to San Diego’s burgeoning innovation economy.

“I am honored to join with representatives from multiple levels of government and private industry leaders to remember Duane, and highlight the remarkable atmosphere for entrepreneurship that we have grown in San Diego,” Congressman Peters said. “Today we honor Duane’s memory and his contributions to our regional innovation economy by promoting the entrepreneurial spirit across the country so that we can keep our country competitive into the next century.”

“I’m glad that the City and County of San Diego and Congressman Peters came together to honor Duane and recognize his contributions to San Diego’s innovation economy,” Ted Roth said. “Scott Peters has been a credible and dependable advocate for San Diego’s business and research communities, both as a private citizen and his many years as an elected official.”

Nathan Fletcher had the following statement: “Duane was a tremendous ally to San Diego’s innovators. He understood the power of technology to transform people’s lives and pushed every single day to make our region more fertile ground for research and business.  Our tech and biotech industries are better for his commitment and leadership.  He is greatly missed by everyone who worked with him, and particularly those of us who had the honor of calling him a friend.”

Rep. Peters introduced a resolution (HRes 401) in the U.S. House of Representatives last week that would designate the 3rd Tuesday of November as National Entrepreneurs’ Day. Today, the San Diego City Council and San Diego County Board of Supervisors passed resolutions honoring Duane Roth’s contributions to San Diego’s innovation economy and spirit of entrepreneurship.
