CONTACT: Alex Roth, 619-228-325San Diego — With just 18 days left until Election Day, the Scott Peters re-election campaign is reminding voters of Peters’ commitment to keeping college affordable and accessible so all kids get the opportunity America gave him.
“Making college more affordable will help our nation’s young people succeed,” Peters said. “My legislation will lower the debt burden on students and make it easier for them to pursue higher education. I know personally how important student loans are: I wouldn’t have been able to attend college without student loans and work study programs.”In addition to introducing the Student Loan Repayment Assistance Act, Peters co-introduced the Federal Student Loan Refinancing Act and supported last year’s successful effort to stop federal student loan interest rates from doubling. The Student Loan Repayment Assistance Act creates tax incentives for employees to set aside money to pay off their student debts and for employers to assist them with their contributions, similar to a 401k plan.It also extends the deferred payment period from 6 months to 12 months when the national unemployment rate rises above the natural rate of unemployment as targeted by the Federal Reserve.“The differences between Scott Peters and Carl DeMaio couldn’t be more stark when it comes to making education more affordable,” said Alex Roth, communications director for the Scott Peters for Congress campaign. “Carl DeMaio has waged an all-out assault on education, pushing for nearly $50 million in cuts to California’s student-loan programs. Scott Peters has made it one of his top priorities to help young people afford an education.”
