Peters Campaign Challenges DeMaio to Debates
San Diego – Rep. Scott Peters’ re-election campaign today challenges Tea Party candidate Carl DeMaio to a series of policy-specific debates leading up to the Nov. 4 General Election. Peters and DeMaio were the top two vote getters in yesterday’s primary election.
“The contrast between Scott Peters and Tea Party candidate Carl DeMaio could not be more stark; we are eager to compare Scott’s record of bipartisan leadership to Carl’s record of divisiveness and extremism,” said Campaign Manager MaryAnne Pintar.
The Peters campaign proposes five debates on the following topics:
  • Jobs and the Economy
  • Military, Defense, and Veterans
  • Civil Rights, Women’s Rights, Voting Rights, and LGBT Equality
  • Environmental Protection and Climate Change
  • The Federal Budget and Government Reform
The campaign also proposes the following hosts and venues:
  • The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, moderator to be determined
  • KUSI TV, moderated by Tony Perry
  • KNSD TV, “Politically Speaking” hosted and moderated by Gene Cubbison
  • KPBS Radio/TV, moderated by Peggy Pico or Joanne Faryon
  • KOGO AM, Talk Radio, moderated by LaDona Harvey
Since the Congressman has a job to do, dates will be proposed by the Peters campaign during the weeks Congress is not in session. None of the hosts proposed by the Peters campaign have endorsed a candidate in this race.
Peters is a first-term member of Congress who defeated a 16-year incumbent in 2012.  He is the former President of the San Diego City Council, elected by his colleagues three years in a row to this post. He is also a former Chairman of the San Diego Unified Port Commission, selected by his colleagues for this post, too. DeMaio is a one-term City Councilman who has the distinction of being the only member of his City Council to never be selected by his colleagues to chair a Committee. He ran for Mayor in 2012, and lost to Bob Filner after outspending Filner 3-1.
