Walz stops in La Jolla as part of California fundraising blitz for Harris

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris, joked Sunday during a fundraiser in La Jolla that it might feel like national Democrats view Californians as a bank.

“But that’s not how we view you,” Walz told the laughing crowd, adding that he and Harris, a former U.S. senator from California, appreciated all of the state’s contributions. “And let’s just be clear — California’s next contribution is Madam President.”

Walz was in San Diego for just two hours Sunday on the first leg of a fundraising blitz up the Pacific coast on behalf of the Harris Victory Fund. After his plane touched down around 2 p.m. at San Diego International Airport, Walz spent several minutes shaking hands and chatting with Rep. Scott Peters, his former colleague in Congress, before police whisked his motorcade to the La Jolla home of Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Jacobs.

“Walz is everything you’ve heard about him — he’s a football coach, he’s a teacher, he’s a Minnesotan, he’s a hunter and he’s just a really good person,” Peters said a few minutes before Walz’s plane landed. “I’m really excited he got picked for this ticket and I think America would be really well served with him as vice president.”

Peters said Walz is a great and “inclusive leader” and recalled a time in the beginning of their 2015 term when Walz gathered all of the Democrats from the House Committee on Veterans Affairs to ask them what they needed and to offer his support.

“You saw in him someone who’s focused on results, not just on process,” Peters said. “That’s the kind of model we need for leadership in Washington.”

Jacobs, the longtime San Diego philanthropist, spoke first to the fundraiser attendees gathered at his home overlooking La Jolla, followed by his granddaughter Rep. Sara Jacobs, who introduced Walz to a loud ovation.

Walz elicited several big laughs from the crowd, joking that he’d “rather eat glass” then be back in Congress and that even when San Diego is covered in a marine layer, it still has better weather than Minnesota.

Walz told those gathered Sunday a story about riding in a motorcade through rural Pennsylvania with Harris shortly after she announced him as her running mate. He said the road was lined on one side with Harris supporters and on the other side with supporters of former President Donald Trump.

“She turned around to me and she said, ‘Tim, don’t ever forget, we work just as hard for this side of the street as that side of the street,’” Walz recalled.

He said he and Harris know what they’re up against with Trump and called out the lies and misinformation that Trump has spread about the federal response to the Hurricane Helene disaster.

“This is when Americans do the best,” Walz said. “This is when Donald Trump sees a political opportunity.”

Walz addressed the crowd for about 15 minutes, ending by imploring the group to protect democracy and do everything they can, just as he and Harris have been doing.

“This campaign has been full of joy,” Walz said. “Let’s get this thing won.”

Walz was back at the airport by 4 p.m. and flew to his next campaign stop in Santa Barbara.
