DeMaio Goes Full Tea Party in Interview with SD Source

July 23, 2014

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 23, 2014CONTACT: Alex Roth, 619-228-3253San Diego –Carl DeMaio went full Tea Party today, saying he would 1) risk another government shutdown by allowing the U.S. to default on its debts and 2) repeal the Affordable Care Act.

His campaign unveiled these positions in an interview with San Diego Source. DeMaio’s willingness to allow a government default – and risk another government shutdown — is straight out of the Tea Party playbook. It is a strategy that has been condemned by the nation’s leading business leaders and economic groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. It is an utterly reckless and nihilistic approach that could plunge the economy back into a recession. In short, DeMaio is willing to jeopardize the full faith and credit of the United States. He is advocating a strategy so toxic to the economy that a coalition of 251 business groups signed a letter last year – at the behest of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce – urging Congress to reject this approach.“Every small business owner should be horrified by what Carl DeMaio is advocating,” said Alex Roth, communications director for the Scott Peters for Congress Campaign. “Apparently DeMaio is willing to torpedo the entire American economy for the sake of scoring some cheap political points.”In sharp contrast to DeMaio, Rep. Scott Peters won bipartisan praise last year for proposing a strategy that would shrink the budget deficit while also making sure the U.S. government avoids a catastrophic default by paying the bills it has already incurred. Rep. Peters introduced two bills that would do just that: the Pay Down the Debt Act and the Protect America’s Credit Act.In the same interview, a DeMaio spokesman also said DeMaio would vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act.“DeMaio really needs to explain why our country would be better off returning to the days when an insurance company could deny you coverage based on a pre-existing condition or drop you once you get sick,” Roth said. “DeMaio has managed to hoodwink the national press with his faux-moderate shtick but his policies reveal his true Tea Party identity.”
