WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement on his vote against H.R. 807, a bill that creates more confusion about the debt ceiling instead of taking action to actually address the self-manufactured crisis-to-crisis cycle of governance that harms our economic recovery.
“I have always said that the debt limit is not something to play games with,” Rep. Peters said. “Planning for default is irresponsible, puts our nation’s credit rating at risk, and sends the wrong message to businesses and families. Instead of planning for default, we should be hard at work preventing it. I urge House and Senate leaders to immediately appoint conferees to resolve the differences between the budgets of each chamber.
“It is time to pass legislation that reduces our debt while making critical investments in our future and does so in a balanced, bipartisan manner through an adult dialogue.”
