Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – This morning, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement on the ongoing investigation into misconduct by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which allegedly targeted conservative 501(c)(4) organizations inappropriately.

Congressman Peters said, “All Americans, regardless of political party or ideology, should be treated equally under the law, and no federal agency should ever use its authority in a biased way for political purposes, ever.  If these reports are true, the actions are outrageous, unacceptable, and completely inconsistent with the high standards of fairness Americans deserve from their government.”

“As this investigation continues the IRS must be open and held accountable for any wrongdoing. The American people deserve answers.  I look forward to receiving a full report from the Inspector General on exactly what happened. We must do whatever necessary to ensure that the IRS is an agency that our citizens can count on to be fair and impartial.”
