Congressman Peters’ Statement on 10-Year Anniversary of Cedar Fire

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement remembering the ten-year anniversary of the Cedar Fire that devastated several communities in San Diego, including Scripps Ranch, Tierrasanta, and other areas now in the 52nd District. During the fire, Congressman Peters was a San Diego City Councilmember for District 1.

“Ten years ago our community was hit by a disaster that ravaged homes and took precious lives. But over the past decade, we’ve come together to rebuild and regrow. While this is a somber time of remembrance, it also reminds us of the generosity and compassion that binds San Diegans together in the face of horrible circumstances. We must also use this occasion as a call to action to plan ahead on a local, state, and federal level for increasingly common extreme weather occurrences.”

As part of his ongoing commitment to community resiliency and preparedness in the face of natural disasters and extreme weather, Congressman Peters introduced HR 2322, the STRONG Act, which would direct the Federal government to develop a plan to support federal, state, and local resiliency efforts and create a more comprehensive information center for communities to prepare for and recover from extreme weather events. Further, in the recently passed Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA), the Congressman added an amendment to make it easier for local governments and their residents to gain information about preparedness.
