CONTACT: Alex Roth, 619-228-3253San Diego – The Humane Society Legislative Fund has endorsed Rep. Scott Peters for re-election, citing Peters’ “strong leadership and advocacy on animal protection policies.”“Scott Peters has been a leading champion of legislation to protect animals from cruelty and abuse and he is working to promote the values of kindness and compassion to all creatures,” Sara Amundson, the group’s executive director, said in a press release. All voters “who care about the humane treatment of animals” should cast their ballot for Peters in the November election, Amundson said. The Humane Society Legislative Fund is the nation’s leading political advocacy group for animal welfare. The group, which is based in Washington, D.C., announced the endorsement earlier this week.“For many people, pets are part of the family, and that affection for our pets translates to compassion for all animals,” Peters said. “The Humane Society’s endorsement is an honor. Their work on behalf of animals, day in and day out, is truly inspiring.”In its release, the group cited a long list of Peters’ efforts on behalf of animals. Peters has co-sponsored legislation that would make it a crime to attend or bring a child to a dogfight or cockfighting. He has sponsored bills that would prevent abuses against show horses and crack down on the sale of chimpanzees and other primates in the exotic-pet trade.Among other things, he has supported efforts to fully fund enforcement of the federal Animal Welfare Act, the Horse Protection Act and the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.
